While the image is a dirt road that runs an apple orchard on the way to the mountains in the background. The coverage provides a good visual story telling Guterson. This is the story of a doctor named Ben Givens, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer was. He has to live three months, and will traveleast of the mountains until the end of his life on his terms.

Ben Givens is in a difficult situation in his life. This will include some items in his planHome look as if it were only a few hours, packing a few pairs of clothes for hunting and gun, and the preparation of food and supplies for his two hunting dogs, will travel with him. Ben's plan is to go with a shooting last month in a desert, which is familiar, and then shoot himself in such a way that has not suffered.

After loading his Scout and all its materials and their two dogs, went to the mountains. His plans quickly changedwhen one of his dogs is increasing in the front seating area and leads to the loss of his vehicle Givens. It includes the Scout around a tree, giving it a bad cut on his forehead and a huge black eye. His dog escaped the incident unharmed, but now put Givens in the middle of nowhere on a rainy night. A young hippie couple met briefly during the journey to nowhere in particular and Givens contributed to security. They fed some snacks and a conversation began, as Ben is incrediblyLucky he did not die before reaching a local town. Givens paid zero to a trailer of his vehicle on the side of the road and then decided that it should continue with its plans. Not with the remaining days of a vehicle would be much more difficult, but took leave of the hippie couple and began to walk with his dogs.

Ben and his dog asleep in nature and birds hunted with his shotgun to eat. He has captured some of the birds in his coat when he needed them and madeMake sure that his dogs and enjoyed some bird feed to stay. He begins to have flashbacks of his past, where the author tells of his father and his future wife, Rachel. His father instilled great values of Ben, like honesty and stay away from alcohol. His mother pushed him to make the most of themselves and eventually led him into force in the medical field. Then there was Rachel, the most influential person in the life of Ben. Reader has a sense in this book that Rachel Ben missed terriblyand looks forward to meeting her in another life. They met near Ben's house where Rachel had apples for the summer. He crept along steadily from where they kissed and love. Their relationship came to a one day, when Rachel left for school nurses and forced Ben in the army.

Much of the book is dedicated to Ben's time spent in the army. It was against the wishes of his father and became an infantry soldier in the Army Ski Patrol. He traveledworldwide and nearly frozen to death, but some great memories made along the way. Ben became tense battles in which his friends shot and killed right next to him. His best friend, Stackhouse, was shot three times, including once in the chest, but thanks to Ben, was saved after open-heart surgery. Not only witness to his chest ripped his friend Ben, but has helped to pump the liquids to Stackhouse and stop bleeding from bullet holes in others. This was a great influence on his decisionDoctor to be. He realized he had more to do with his natural talent and could help save people's lives. The most important memories from his days of war was the time he met with Rachel is in a foreign country. If they are true, Rachel and Ben both looked older, but still immensely attracted to each other. They decided together with her married second day and promised to stay together until death. Rachel said she wanted her ashes buried next to each other one daythey may mix and a beautiful flower.

After Ben's flashback, we are led back to his current situation. He is still slow in the desert with her two dogs to walk on its final destination. Suddenly he heard the wolves and wolf dogs in the distance walked on him fast. There were ten or twelve dogs chasing a wolf as a wolf ran to his right, which combine two weaker dogs to hunt in his. Ben knew that the wolf dogs were bred andtrained to kill, moving, and he knew that his two hunting dogs were in serious trouble. He drove slowly and pack of dogs when they finally found him, Wolf was dead, and be eaten by dogs. One of his dogs, Tristan, was nowhere to be found. His other dog, Rex, was poor with large open wounds all over his body hurt. One to shoot the wolf or dog Rex in the neck, forcing Givens and kill the dog to save his dog. The dog's owner arrived soonDirt Bike and accused of killing his dog Ben innocent. The crazy man ended up stealing a family heirloom to Ben shotgun and took off. When the doctor that he is, Givens used local facilities available to the wounds of the dog, was good at sewing until it is to find a veterinarian. The weapon is not at this point now, just wanted to make his dog lived another day.

The problem was that Ben and Rex were in the middle of nowhere. Ben is determined to save Rex, took him in hisPoor for several miles until you reach a small town. There was a small restaurant in the city, where Ben grabbed a quick bite to eat. He bribed a local truck driver with sixty dollars on him to do and Rex in the veterinary office. The man was struck and forced up friendly conversation on the road. Rex ended with his points of luck removed and replaced in veterinary practice room, where Ben has contributed a back surgery. Rex was tired and would undoubtedly be sore for a few months, butVeterinary and Ben managed to save his life. Givens was happy to have Rex from his side and felt I had done something good at the end of his life.

At this time, Givens had a realization. He was unhappy in a hotel room to feel old, realizing that he needs to live his last days. Givens had met so many nice people who went out of their way to accommodate him and his dog. In addition, Givens understood that among so many people happy just because life, hisFamily that would now be very worried. Ben decided that he would call her sons and go home with Rex at the earliest. His children would know his plans, his trip, his illness, and would help him live the last three months of his life.

Ben went to the bus station and bought a ticket to his hometown. During the trip he spoke with a young girl, philosophy and religion, and what might happen in the afterlife. Givens said she was a doctor and wasyoung girls turned his attention to a group of three young Mexicans in the back of the bus. One of the men was clearly ill but refused treatment. With the medical knowledge of Ben and the girls fluent Spanish, have been able to tell the men who had the patient in a hospital, or he probably would have died. Givens had the feeling that the boy had tuberculosis, a disease that should not be ignored. The boy has been refused treatment, saying that work and earn so requested at the nextStop Ben called for an ambulance to take the man. Both Ben and the girl knew the man was illegally in the country and could be deported, expelled, but would be better than dead.

After the boy and his brother were taken to hospital against their will, Ben noticed the other young Mexicans stand around and do not know what to do next. Ben ended up buying him dinner and calling your local employment office, where he found the man a process of Applesthe junction of Orchard Wolfhound. Ben and the man ate steaks together, Ben paid for dinner, and have rented a car to leave town. The two from the Orchard to make sure that man would set up a job, and Ben spent the night in a small hut on the site of the orchard. The Mexican man entered the hut late at night Ben and lit a fire for him to say thank you. While in the car, another person came to tell Ben that a woman was in labor and the baby would not be out. Ben did not thinktwice to get out of bed and run like a 70 year old could walk into his cabin. When he entered the hut, he saw a woman with an overweight baby blue, make the obvious. After some manipulation of the baby boom and the cable supplied with Ben baby girl 15 years. It 'was the hero of the night and returned to his cabin to sleep a bit' much needed.

In the morning, Givens again awakened by the lady-of-the-wolf dog house with orchards. Well donethat this is the home of the man who had his gun on the dirt bike, and that was probably the wife or mother. He told the woman the story of his dogs and his gun, but not out for revenge, at this point. Ben just wanted to be near his family home and loved. The woman felt bad for him and was grateful to Ben a child the night before delivery, so they decided to take him home, several hours in each direction. Before leaving on their truck, Ben saw the man who had hisgun approach and go with the woman in the house. Ben cried, and walked over to him, rather than confrontation, but to know what was told to do things well. He said the bad people, the gun is cursed, and man can have. It was something of a relief for Ben to give up his weapon. He said that weapons do not get nothing but bad luck and the man had his share of bad luck on the road.

While driving back to town at the home of Ben over the mountains, the woman andBen had a great conversation about life and how precious it is, an individual. This is the idea of well-armed again that he belongs at home with his family. He needed to live, to know the rest of his days with his children so that the truth about him and feel close when Ben dies. He returns to his small house and find things exactly as he left. At home, the comfort and a sense of relief. Ben rolled up in his warm bed and pulled the bed next to Rexher. The story ends with the two of them side by side in their beds, a man with his companion, both want to live to see another day.
